Kitchen Update

Well I finally finished my kitchen update. My last post was about updating my kitchen with a little paint, new cabinet knobs, and a lot of elbow grease. I started this project on a Saturday, and didn’t finish painting until the following Wednesday. Of course I did take Sunday off, but all the hard work was worth it.

I showed you my plans and my before photos in the last post, but I though I would remind you of what my kitchen was like before. It had red walls and white cabinets. I loved the red for a long time, but I had repainted my living and family room areas with white and blue, and the red kitchen just didn’t fit any more.

Blue and white have to be my all time favorite color scheme. It creates such a peaceful, calming atmosphere. I repainted my upper cabinets white, and painted the walls white. The lower cabinets got several coats of navy (almost a cobalt) blue. The kitchen looks so open and bright. I removed all my counter clutter, and hope to keep it clutter free because it looks so much cleaner. What do you think?

This is a before and after of the eat-in area. Notice how dark the first image is compared to the second.

Notice the difference between these two photos.

I just love how my kitchen turned out. The curtain topper you see in the second photo is one that I found at Goodwill for about $2-3 dollars. I saw it, and thought it might work, so I have been saving it until I could update my kitchen. I like that it adds the blue color to the upper area without blocking out the natural light. This is the only window in my kitchen.

This second picture shows you the blue color a little better, and also how well my rugs go with the color scheme. Remember I bought my rugs on sale a while back, and used the blue color in the rug to pick out my blue paint.

I also found this blue and white tray at Goodwill. It was the perfect accent for my counter top. It pulls in the blue color with a touch of gold. I use this for my fruit, and it makes the apples, oranges and bananas look so pretty. The chickens you see were all purchased in antique stores. I’m sure that I didn’t pay much for them, but I love that they are white, and can go with any color (especially my blue).

This is the only solid wall in my kitchen, and you can see that it isn’t very “solid.” I love the white shutters that give a view into the living room. They can be closed when I feel my kitchen is a mess, but the wall is only a partial wall. I love how the white looks. I moved my microwave off the counter, and placed it on this cabinet. It works perfect here, and gives me more counter space in my kitchen.

I added this bookpage wreath that I made, and this basket of sunflowers. The flowers look so cheery. I like blue and yellow together, and these were left over from my daughter’s wedding. I always search my house over when I am updating a room to look for things that I already have that I can use to change things up.

Over two of the shutters on this wall I hung two plates. I also purchased these from Goodwill (I love plates). These were especially cute, and applied to my home, so I bought them. Here are close-ups of the plates.

I hope you can read them, these photos seem a bit blurry to me. The first plate above says, “Thank God for dirty dishes, they have a tale to tell, while others may go hungry, we’re eating very well.” This reminds me to be thankful that I have a family, food, and a home to clean up – Thankful reminders. The second says, “My house is clean enough to be healthy, and dirty enough to be happy!” We live in our homes, they aren’t supposed to be perfect. What a sweet reminder of what’s important.

One last item to show you – this belonged to my grandmother. She was one of the sweetest ladies, and she loved her family. When she passed away, I was asked to come and pick out some of her things, and this was one of the items I got. I love vintage images, and I just loved the little chicks on this coffee container. I keep my sugar packets in it. It is so precious to me because it was hers, and it reminds me of her each time I look at it. I love to have items in my home that remind me of the really important things. Praise God I will see her again on day.

This is the front and back.

Well, what do you think of my kitchen update? I love it. I have been wanting to work on this room for a while, but I knew that it would take a lot of time, but it was worth the wait. I spent about $15 on blue paint, and $30 on new cabinet knobs. I had already purchased my white paint for my back entry update, so I spent very little for such a big change in my kitchen. The biggest investment was my time and effort. There are still a few things that I would like to do in here, but it would require more time and money than I have right now. I want to put in a tile backsplash on the sink wall, and update the lighting in my kitchen. I will get it done eventually. That’s the thing with a home, there’s always something to do – right?

Hope you have a great week.
